Summer School Day 5: White Space

One of our favorite regular educational series is our set of Summer School classes. Understanding and internalizing different design concepts allows you to bring your ideas to life. With a little practice, these ideas will quickly become intuitive, leading your card designs to come together with minimal effort.

We've reached the final day of summer school, and hope that even if you were already familiar with these ideas, you've been inspired to revisit these time-tested concepts. Keep reading for today's lesson, and all the details for submitting your homework for an opportunity to win an MFT shopping spree.

You still have more than a week to complete your homework, so no excuses (not even an eager dog!) for not participating! Create a unique project for each homework lesson to be eligible to win the grand prize.

Today’s Lesson: White Space

The idea of white space doesn’t refer to a primarily white card (though often, as is the case with today’s project, this is true) but rather, the idea of leaving a significant portion of your design open, free from embellishment, allowing your focal point to truly shine.

Karolyn's take on white space is fresh, modern, and exemplifies this concept in vivid detail. You'll notice how the upper half of the card provides ample "resting" space for your eyes, allowing her dreamy Polaroid-framed scene to shine as bright as the sun element she's tucked into the upper corner. ☀️ I don't know about you, but just as the sentiment alludes, I definitely wish I was there!

Another wonderful lesson. I had to go to google (and my art major, daughter) for a little more understanding. I hope the card I submitted is showing this technique correctly.

Hi, Karolyn -
The card you made for us as well as many of the extras you shared) was really clean and beautiful. I will try to feature white space more. I agree w/ you about doing 2x certain design elements such as (in your card) the tree top, the surfboard, and the sun. The dimension adds just that extra little pop.
Keep up the good work and thanks for the ideas.

Thanks for sharing what white space is – I find it really difficult to control myself when crafting and always feel that I have to fill every bit of the card with ‘stuff’ – lol
