Summer School 2018: Focal Point

Summer School 2018 is back for a second week and we couldn’t be more excited to share another week of lessons and challenges!

One of our perennial favorites around here is our Summer School series. Understanding and internalizing different design concepts allows you to bring your ideas to life. With a little practice, these ideas will quickly become intuitive, leading your card designs to come together with minimal effort. Over the course of the next five days, we’ll bring you videos and projects designed to help you understand these basic principles and incorporate them into your own crafting.

Today we’re talking about the idea of a focal point; a way to concentrate the recipients interest on the main element of the design. While we may sometimes be tempted to throw everything but the kitchen sink onto our cards (so many pretty things to play with!) sticking to a single point of emphasis helps prevent the mental fatigue of identifying a single landing spot for our eyes.

Today’s instructor is My Favorite Things Design Team member Karolyn Loncon. Click HERE or simply watch the video below to get learn more about creating a focal point.

Did you notice how Karolyn not only honed in on the idea of a focal point image but also, of enhancing the focal point with the addition of some simple shading? That beautiful blending provides contrast and defines the area.
